Montréal pianist and composer Andrés Vial (pronounced Vee-al) brings his trio, featuring bassist Ira Coleman and drummer André White, to GigSpace for the first time. They will perform original compositions from Vial's recent Juno nominated albums, as well as standards and jazz tunes by Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, George Shearing, Harold Arlen and others.
Vial has has performed with Joe Chambers, Peter Bernstein, Ingrid Jensen, Malika Tirolien (Bokanté), Ivan Neville, Michael Blake, Kevin Dean, Greg Cohen, Al McLean, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba and many others. Described as a "fine jazz pianist" (Scott Yanow, New York City Jazz Record) and "brilliant Monk interpreter" (Tor Hammerø, Nettavisen), he he has played at over 50 festivals around the world and released 7 albums as a leader. He is currently a doctoral candidate and instructor at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, and has given jazz piano masterclasses at Dartmouth College, Vanier College and UQAM. He has also contributed articles about jazz and improvisation to Downbeat Magazine and Cumulus Press.
